ESL Student Yuka: Discovering the World

Evening ESL Students celebrated Adult Education Week with an Essay Contest.

Essay Contest Writer Yuka Otake, a student in Teacher Lily's class, shares her essay here:

Learning in Adult School is a really good chance for me to know the world I have never known.

I came to the United States 9 months ago.  I had studied English hard for the entrance exam to university in Japan, but after graduating university, I had very few chances to use English.  so when I arrived to the United States, I was not confident in speaking English, but when I tried, people listened to me and tried to figure out what I wanted to say.  I felt grateful to them and began thinking about learning English more.

I can't attend the morning class because I have to take care of my little son.  But what is good for me is that at San Mateo Adult School has the evening classes.  I felt kind of guilty coming to class only once a week, but the teacher said she knows some students have to work or take care of their family, but all the students have a chance to learn.  I was really relieved to hear that.

At the class, I can learn many new English words and expressions.  And more, I can learn some American customs.  I didn't know that using an ambulance in the United States is so expensive!

And another reason I like the Adult Schoool is that there are many students from different countries.  Japan is still a kind of "closed country," while I was walking in town, most of people around me were Japanese.  I hadn't met Mexicans, Turks, Indians and Dutch people when I was in Japan. I really enjoy listening to the stories about their countries.

I appreciate the Adult School giving me such precious experience!

Thank you, Yuka, for sharing your essay and inspiring others.
