Meet Dr. K, Ka'Ryn Holder-Jackson, New Direction of ACCEL, our Regional Consortium

New ACCEL Director

This month we welcome "Dr. K," Ka'Ryn Holder-Jackson, as the new Executive Director of ACCEL, our Regional Consortium.   Her first name is pronounced "Kuh-rin."  You can call her, "Dr. K."
Her office is next to the Learning Center, in the right hand back corner of the SMART Center.  If you see Dr. K on campus, you can introduce yourself and welcome her to our school community.

Dr. K is Passionate about Education

Dr. K is excited about serving Adult Learners.  She says, "I'm passionate about education, particularly since I did a lot of my education as an adult."  She received her MBA and her PhD as an adult learner.  She understands the reality of balancing home, work, and family.    "I admire adult learners since it takes a lot of courage and discipline," she says.
"They are the true champions."

More About Dr. K

In her free time, Dr. K enjoys reading mysteries and biographies.   She likes spending time with her family and she loves teaching a weekly Sunday School class to teens.

ACCEL's Tagline and Dr. K's Message for Students

The new tagline for ACCEL is "Imagine, explore, and accelerate."  Dr. K loves it.  She looks forward to helping students imagine their career path, explore the possibilities, and then accelerate toward their goals.

Dr. K has a message for students:  "Are you ready to take flight and soar toward your dreams?   Yes? ...Then let's begin!  Already in motion?  Fabulous!!! Keep moving until you reach your goal!  I look forward to seeing you at the top!"

Adult Ed Regional Consortium System

Adult Education in California is divided into regions.  Each region has a consortium - a group of Adult Schools and Community Colleges - working together to provide Adult Education to that area.  In this way, everyone can think about the special needs and strengths of each area.   You can learn more about the Regional Consortium system and the Adult Ed Block Grant here.

SASS Success

Our school is part of a Regional Consortium - a group - that provides Adult Education to the people of San Mateo County.  The name of our Regional Consortium is ACCEL.

One of the other Adult Schools is ACCEL is Sequoia Adult School in Redwood City.

Sequoia Adult School has a special organization to help their students go on to college.  The name of the organization is Sequoia Adult School Scholars.  Recently, one of our own San Mateo Adult School students, Mario Dominguez was helped by SASS with a college scholarship.

Read about SASS success here:

Record number of SASS students honored at Cañada graduation
On May 27th, fifteen SASS students received a degrees or certificate from Cañada College, up from seven students a year ago.
SASS grads

Three students received Associate degrees and will transfer to four-year universities. Katherine Ramirez will study economics at UC Berkeley, Karen Velazquez will study psychology at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and Viridiana Yengle will most likely attend Cal State East Bay to get her special education credential.

Katherine Ramirez
Viridiania Yengle

Silvia Gomez is the first SASS student to earn a certificate in medical assisting. In addition, 11 students received PASS certificates. This certificate signifies that a student has completed all required Cañada College ESL classes as well as English 100, a college-level class that counts for credit at the University of California. These students can now start taking classes to prepare them for their chosen careers.

Special thanks to the Palo Alto Community Fund and the Henrikson Family Foundation
We want to extend our appreciation to the Palo Alto Community Fund and the Henrikson Family Foundation for choosing SASS as a 2017 grantee. This spring SASS supported more than 180 students in community college and provided 54 students with tutors. SASS's continued growth would not be possible without supporters like these.

Farewell and Congratulations to Teacher Lisa

Teacher Lisa Wins Award

Wonderful SMAS ESL Teacher Lisa Dolehide won a special award last week.  She won a CCAE Bay Section 2017 Excellence in Teaching award.  CCAE is the California Council for Adult Education.  The Bay Section is all the Adult Schools in the San Francisco Bay Region.

2017 CCAE Bay Conference

Lisa was not able to attend the CCAE 2017 Bay Section Conference so when the award was announced, student leaders accepted the award for her.

Lisa has a special relationship with student leaders because she was the Student Council Coordinator for many years.  She is a mentor for student leaders.

What is a mentor?  A mentor is a guide or counselor.  A mentor helps someone along the path.

Surprise for Lisa

At school, on Monday, they surprised her with the award.  As you can see from the photos, she was very surprised!

SMAS Assistant Director Tim Doyle surprises Lisa with the award.
SC Coordinator and English Learner Specialist Marina presents her with flowers.

Leaving for New Adventures
A few days later, student leaders surprised her with beautiful cards.  This is because not only did Lisa win a special award for her teaching, but also she is leaving SMAS for new adventures for a few years.
Mr. T and Lisa look at her beautiful cards.
Cristina presented Lisa with the gorgeous flowers.
We will miss her many wonderful contributions to our school, our Regional Consortium ACCEL, our community, and to the well-being of Adult Education across the state.

Lisa Dolehide, ESL Teacher – San Mateo Adult School

Lisa has a question she always asks when we’re organizing events, planning new programs, or campaigning for more funds for Adult Education: “Who’s going to own that?” Lisa understands that to make things happen, someone or some people have taken ownership for seeing something through from an idea to a reality. She is a master at this - and gifted at teaching this skill to others, especially students, and most especially student leaders. She knows that leadership and bringing events to success is founded on a combination of vision, organization, and taking on many steps along the way - owning the idea, process, and outcome.

Lisa served as Staff Advisor to SMAS Student Council for 14 years nurturing it from a small exercise in democracy to a powerhouse of action and advocacy. Working with students with a wide range of home languages and English skills, she mentored their abilities to lead, plan, organize, advocate, and respond to problems with solutions. Many students in Student Council have shared that voting in Student Council was the first times in their lives they had ever voted. Lisa helped students understand the democratic process, elections, how to facilitate meetings, plan for events, prepare workshops and presentations, connect with administrators, local community leaders, and elected officials. She also supervised the finances of the Student Council – which is no small matter. The Council, thanks to the creation and sales of Student ID cards and other various fundraising efforts, generally has about 10,000 dollars in its account.

Under her guidance, the SMAS Student Council presented at numerous CCAE Conferences at both the local and state level. Last year’s CCAE State Conference in Burlingame was smoothly run in great part thanks to the student leaders and volunteers - who were all coached by Lisa. The student officers themselves gain leadership and peer mentorship skills by presiding over student government meetings and by attending the yearly CCAE legislation action day in Sacramento, where they get to share their experiences as students and express their ideas and concerns about adult education with of the office staff of state assemblymen and senators. Students under Lisa’s guidance have organized letter writing campaigns in support of CCAE’s advocacy positions and have attended legislative hearings on the future of Adult Education at the Capitol. SMAS Student Council system is now a role model for Adult Schools around the state. Underneath, behind, alongside our amazing student leaders was the wind of Lisa, giving lift to their leadership wings.

Lisa has been a leader since the beginning of the consortium process. She has made certain that the teacher and student voices are not lost in the planning process. As the local San Mateo consortium, ACCEL, moved to creating governance structures, Lisa joined the Steering Committee and represented teachers’ interests for the county’s Adult Schools. When ACCEL moved to the implementation phase, Lisa became the co-facilitator along with a community college faculty counterpart, of the Central Collaboration Action Team. This body brought together the faculty, support staff and administrators to design alignment processes, pilot new classes and drive the innovation that the legislators called for when they developed the Adult Education Block Grant, AEBG, and legislation. Lisa is currently involved in a number of change projects which continue to push change in San Mateo County schools. All of these other organizing activities occur while Lisa continues to be an exemplary teacher in the classroom. She has been at San Mateo Adult School for 17 years, primarily teaching at the Low Intermediate ESL level. In her spare time she has managed to contribute to the textbooks series Ventures and to help Burlington English with expert advice to refine their software to be more teacher and user friendly.

Lisa Dolehide is a wonderful colleague and an extraordinary adult educator

Meet Anne Adamson, Our New Executive Director of ACCEL

Meet Anne Adamson, Our New Executive Director of ACCEL

Anne Adamson is the new Executive Director of ACCEL, our Regional Consortium.   Adult Education for California is now divided into regions.  Each region has a consortium - a group of Adult Schools and Community Colleges - working together to provide Adult Education to that area.  In this way, everyone can think about the special needs and strengths of each area.

Anne is the first person to have this new job of Executive Director.  Until now, our Director Mr. T and Assistant Director Tim helped to run ACCEL.  Now they are free to focus on our school.

Anne will look at the big picture of Adult Education in San Mateo County.  She will visit all the schools and colleges that provide Adult Education and help them create pathways to success for adult learners.

She will put all the pieces together to understand how to lead ACCEL and provide the best Adult Education possible in San Mateo County.

Before She Came Here

Before Anne became the Executive Director of ACCEL, she worked as Academic Dean at Santa Barbara Business College in Santa Maria, on the Central Coast of California. Before that she was the Dean and Faculty for University of Phoenix in the Central Valley of California, and before that she was the Child Development Director for Early Head Start in Fresno, California.

She has lived in different parts of California.  She has lived in the Central Valley and on the Central Coast and now she lives here on the Peninsula.  She knows that education is important everywhere because it opens the doors to new opportunities.

Anne's Door is Always Open

Anne’s own door is always open so feel free to stop to say hello.  She will be happy to hear about your experience at our school or to listen to your ideas for how Adult Education can be improved in our county. College Credit for Modern Office Technology Class!

Modern Office Technology is a wonderful class.

You can learn Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, Outlook, and QuickBooks Pro.

You do not need keyboarding skills, computer skills, a high school diploma, a GED, or advanced ESL to take the class.

If you have Intermediate level ESL skills, you can take the class.

Starting in Summer Semester, Monday, April 25, you can get college credit for this class!   If you follow a special program and complete the program in 8 weeks, you can get college credit from the College of San Mateo for parts one and two of Word and parts one and two of Excel.

For each part you complete, you can get 1.5 units of college credit.

If you want to get college credit for each part, here's how it works:

1.  Enroll in the class.
2.  Follow the class syllabus (the step by step guidelines) and complete all the work in 8 weeks
3.  Teacher Diane will give you a grade.
4.  San Mateo Adult School petitions College of San Mateo for credit.
4.  Get a certificate for the class - and college credit!

This college credit is accepted at CSM or any other community college.

If you want to take the class slowly, you can.  You will not get college credit if you do it slowly - but you will still learn many helpful job skills.

This is an Employment Development Department approved course.  If you are on unemployment and your unemployment runs out, you can take this course and get an extension if you meet all the other EDD requirements.  Contact EDD for details.

SMAS All School Meeting April 13, 2016

On April 13, 2016, San Mateo Adult School had an All School Meeting so we could learn more about our Regional Consortium, ACCEL.   We came together to talk and think about the future of our school and all Adult Education.  There are many new rules for Adult Education in California that we must understand and follow.

Assistant Director Tim made a presentation to help us understand what is going on in our Regional Consortium, ACCEL, and for Regional Consortia all across California.

Teacher Lisa made a presentation to help us understand how our school will be a bridge to College, Career and Community.

Here are the slides from each presentation with some information below each slide.  If you have questions about the information, you can ask your teacher, Teacher Patricia, Teacher Lisa, or Teacher Cynthia.

Thank you to Tim and Lisa for making these presentations so we can understand things better.

Tim's presentation about ACCEL:

This is the name of our consortium.  It has 5 Adult Schools and 3 Community Colleges:
San Mateo Adult School, Jefferson Adult School,
Sequoia Adult School, South San Francisco Adult School,
and the new La Costa Adult School on the Western Coast in Half Moon Bay,
and College of San Mateo, Skyline Community College, and Canada Community College.

There are 70 Regional Consortia in California.
There are 72 Community College Districts.  Each district has a Regional Consortium.
Two districts decided to combine with others.

Implementation means put a plan into action, make it real.
This is an implementation year.
This is the list of things we need to make happen.

CCAE is the California Council of Adult Education.
Dawn Koepke is the Legislative Analyst for CCAE.
She gives us advice about government and money.
This is her advice.

The Legislative Analyst Office is part of the California State Government.
The LAO helps the Governor and the Legislature understand things
so they can make good money decisions.
This is information from the LAO.

Metrics are tools to measure things.  We measure things with metrics.
In the future, the success of our school and Adult Education
will be measured with these metrics.

The CCAE State Convention is April 21-23.
San Mateo Adult School will help at the State Convention.

These are the things ahead for our school.
We need to think about these things.
We need to make these things happen.

Here's is Lisa's presentation about the
Pathway Bridge Model:

New Adult School on the Coast

Many of our students drive "over the hill" from Half Moon Bay and other coastal cities for their ESL classes.  For a long time, because of the cuts to Adult Education, there was no Adult School on the coast of San Mateo County.

Teacher Shari Deghi
Coordinator of La Costa Adult School
But now there is!

The name of the new Adult School is La Costa Adult School.  "La Costa"is Spanish for "the coast."

La Costa Adult School is part of ACCEL, our Regional Consortium.  All the schools in ACCEL work together to serve the county of San Mateo.

Our own Teacher Shari is the coordinator of La Costa.

Here is some information from Teacher Shari about the school:

La Costa Adult School

The Western Coast of San Mateo County
La Costa Adult School, the newest adult school in California, serves residents from Montara to Año Nuevo on the San Mateo County coast and is affiliated with the Cabrillo and La Honda/Pescadero Unified School Districts.

La Costa has two locations: Half Moon Bay and Pescadero. Half Moon Bay just started its first classes on January 11 and already over 200 students are taking English as a Second Language (ESL) classes every Monday and Wednesday evening from 6-9 pm at Cunha School. La Costa plans to start GED/HiSET preparation classes this semester and has a waitlist for interested students.

Puente de la Costa Sur has been serving its residents with ESL classes for many years and thanks to increased funding through La Costa Adult School, it is able to increase its offerings. Puente offers ESL, GED/HiSET preparation, Language Skills for Workforce Careers, and primary/secondary education in Spanish.

La Costa works closely with Cañada College and a consortium of all the adult schools and community colleges in San Mateo County to provide education for immigrants, courses for high school equivalency, career technical education programs, apprenticeships and classes for disabled adults.

Volunteers are greatly appreciated and La Costa has current openings for credentialed teachers.
