Sandra Murillo Brucker tells her story.
Our press conference was a big success!
Many people spoke about Adult Education.
Students - from now or many years ago - talked about how Adult Education helped them. They told about how it helps people learn English, become citizens, get jobs, be better parents, stay healthy and active as an older person, and learn new skills.
Congresswoman Jackie Speier said Adult Education is indispensible. That means you cannot live without it.
Bob Harper told the story of Adult Education. How it got started. What is happening now. What we must do to keep it going and make it stronger.
Mathew Kogan talked about what students, staff, and community members did in LA to get back their Adult School. They were going to lose it. They fought hard. They can keep over half now. They are still fighting. They know Adult Education matters!
Ana Turetsky told a sad story. People in Oakland made a sad choice. They closed most of the Oakland Adult School. Many schools have made this sad choice. Many school districts do not have enough money. They have to choose between adults and children. This is a sad choice because children the adults in their life - parents, grandparents, friends, family - to know English. In 2008, the State Legislature said, if you do not have enough money, you can use Adult Education money.
Chris Nelson said flex is hex! (Flex is what happened in 2008. Flex means you can change things. A hex is bad luck.) Make a better change! Give Adult Education its own budget. Adult Education can help so many people. Make it possible for Adult Education to help families, communities, and economies stronger and healthier.
We did a great job.
We delivered our message:
Adult Education matters!
No on WSF!
Flex is hex!
The press came and listened. They told the public our message.
The San Mateo Daily Journal, Univision, Telemundo, KTVU, and KCBS Radio came. If you know about other journalists, please leave a comment or send an email to cyn.eagleton@gmail.com
You can go to the Adult Education Matters blog to see the press coverage. Click on the links to see.
(I will come back and put in links here when I have more time. - Teacher Cynthia.)
Now we hope the people of California and the State Legislature will think about our message.
We hope they will think in a clear and deep way and make good decisions when they vote in the Legislature about the budget and when they vote in elections in the Fall.
More information soon.
Great work, everyone!
