San Mateo Adult School is part of the San Mateo Union High School District.  On February 22nd, our school leaders gave a special presentation to the SMUHS School Board about our school and our consortium, ACCEL.  Director Tim Doyle, Assistant Director Eric Saavedra, ACCEL Executive Director Dr. Ka'Ryn Holder-Jackson, and Student Leaders, Student Council President Wendy Samayoa, Vice President Jackie Euna Lheureux, and Secretary Williams Avelino were the team presenters.

Tim explained our history as a school and talked about what we are doing now and what we will do in the future.  Eric explained the GED and High School Diploma programs. Dr. K explained the consortia goals and plans and talked about the need for Adult Ed in San Mateo County.  President Wendy gave this excellent speech about student leadership at our school:

Good evening everybody. My name is Wendy Samayoa. I’m from Guatemala and I’m the Student Council President. I’m also a High Advanced ESL and a High School Diploma student.

As Student Council officers, we represent the voice for the students with the teachers and staff members.

I have learned how to run Student Council meetings every month, with the representatives of each class, and explain to them the agenda of the month.  Being part of the Student Council has taught me a lot about myself and the potential that I have as a leader.  It has also helped me to improve my English skills, and my public speaking skills as well.

I would like to share with you some of the things we do as Student Council officers:

  • We participate in different activities in and out of the school such as the ESL City Government Academy where we learn about how the City Government works and the Eat Healthy Be Active health program where we learn habits for healthy eating and lifestyles.

  • In 2017, we collected more than $5,000 for different fundraisers to support victims of natural disasters around the world.

  • We attend local conferences and we will be representing Student Council at the National COABE Conference in March, where we will be presenting on Student Leaders as an Agent of Change.

Thank you, and have a good evening.

Williams, Wendy, Jackie

And thank you, SMAS Student Leaders,
for all you do for our school!
