Monday, February 19th, Presidents Day, No School

No School Monday, February 19th, Presidents Day

There is no school Monday February 19.

The Adult School will be closed on Monday February 16, 2015 because it is Presidents Day. On Presidents Day we honor President George Washington and President Abraham Lincoln.

George Washington was the first president of the United States. His birthday was February 22, 1732. He was a general in the Revolutionary War. The U.S. fought the Revolutionary War against the British. The U.S. won the war. This was the beginning of the United States. Sometimes Washington is known as the Father of our Country.

Abraham Lincoln was the president during the Civil War. His birthday was February 12. 1809. He grew up poor and suffered from depression. He had many hardships in his life. He was assassinated during his second term as president.  Before he was assassinated, he accomplished many big things.  Some people think he was the greatest president we have ever had.  He freed the slaves.   He kept the country together in a time of Civil War.  He gave the country a moral vision.  A moral vision is a picture of the best we can be.  It is a direction to go in.

What does assassinate mean? It means to kill a leader. Sometimes we say that to assassinate someone is cut the head off the snake. Without the head, the snake cannot live or move forward. Without a great leader, a country suffers and has difficulty moving forward.
But a country is different from a snake.  A country can grow new leaders.  Our own SMAS community has many good leaders.  A strong community grows strong leaders.   A community that loves people grows leaders who love people, too.  Both Washington and Lincoln had great love for their country.

February 14, five days before Presidents Day, is a day we celebrate love of all kinds, especially romantic love. Do you know the name of this holiday?  Yes, that's right: Valentine's Day!

Who and what do you love?

Who and what inspires you to do great things for others?

And what does "inspire" mean?

Abraham Lincoln was famous for his wisdom and his quick wit.  Here are some things he said:
