Learner to Volunteer: Tatiana Tikhmeneva

As San Mateo Adult School Students gain knowledge, skills, and confidence, they join the work force, advance in their jobs, and engage in volunteer work.  The Learner to Earner page on the San Mateo Adult School website is about their success.  Here's another story in the series.
In her own words, here is Learner to Volunteer Tatiana Tikhmeneva's story:

Tatiana Tikhmeneva. Volunteer Experience

I want to tell you about my volunteer experience. During my studying at San Mateo Adult School and job searching process, I wanted to find an opportunity to volunteer. So, my husband told me about Habitat for Humanity. His company donates money and sends employees to help build houses. I decided to try. I applied for one of the multi-house construction projects located in San Francisco and came on the appointed day. There was a group of people like me, who wanted to help low income people get a house. Together we made walls, did siding work, painted houses and so on. I’m grateful to the professional builders who oversaw and directed me and the other volunteers. They instructed us, corrected us and even if we did something wrong, encouraged us.
Working on this humanitarian project is not only necessary and helpful for society, but it also was an opportunity for me to have a lot of fun and acquire very different skills and work experience!
There will be 28 houses on that construction site. A lottery will be held between more than 400 families who will have a chance to live in one of those homes. It’s really a great feeling when you know that you have done something to help people improve their lives!
