The Power of Student Leadership

San Mateo Adult School Student Leaders presented a workshop on The Power of Student Leadership at the CCAE Bay Section 2015 Conference on February 28th.  It was a big success.

CCAE is the California Council for Adult Education.  It is the only organization with teachers, students, administrators, and community members.  Our Assistant Director Tim Doyle is the new President of the CCAE Bay Section.

The workshop presenters were:
Lisa, Elda, Marina, Daniel, Marco, Melika

Melika Eslamjou, San Mateo Adult School Student
Marco Estrella, San Mateo Adult School, Immediate Past President
Marina Kravtsova, San Mateo Adult School Student Advocate
Daniel Pec, San Mateo Adult School, President

Elda, San Mateo Adult School Student, captured the event on video and provided support.

And Teacher Lisa Dolehide, Staff Advisor to the Student Council, was there to assist.
Daniel goes over the agenda
while Melika stands by.

Marco explained the value of
Student Advocacy
The presenters explained what the ESL Student Council is, how it works, what it does, and why it is so valuable.  They talked about the Student ID Cards and money management.  They discussed Community actions like the Second Harvest Food Drive and the One Warm Coat Drive.  Marco talked about the value of Student Advocacy.  They described the student surveys created for the AB86 Regional Consortia creation process.

Are there more obstacles or benefits?

There are more benefits!
They split the audience into groups.  They asked the groups
to brainstorm obstacles and benefits.  They asked the audience, "What do you think?  Are there are more benefits or obstacles?    What do you think the final decision was?  If you said, the benefits outweigh the obstacles, you are right!
Some of the benefits of Student Leadership are:
They provided an excellent handout.

* Gain confidence and experience
* Help each other
* Earn respect
* Expand skills
* Build self-esteem
* Inspire students, teachers, community

The audience was very enthusiastic.  They learned a lot.  They enjoyed and appreciated the workshop.  They said they wanted to create Student Councils at their schools.

San Mateo Adult School Leaders and the San Mateo Adult School Student Community are making a positive difference at our school, in our community, and across California.   They are showing, in so many ways, why Adult Education and Student Voice matter.
