Community Contributions. Community Spirit.

San Mateo Adult School students have a strong community spirit.  They understand we are all connected.  Contributing to the community helps everyone.

Teacher Lisa Sparks ESL class in San Bruno is held at St. Bruno's church.  The class is part of the San Mateo Adult School.  It is a satellite or off-site location - off the main campus.  Satellite locations make it possible for more people in the community to go to class.  The first Adult School in California was started in the basement of St. Mary's church in San Francisco.  Many Adult School ESL classes meet in community locations like these.

After seeing church members with ashes on their forehead at St. Brunos on Ash Wednesday, students had a conversation about sacrifice and giving back to the community.  The students decided as a class to do a few things during these "40 days", one of which was a donation to help foster kids in need.

Foster kids are children who cannot live with their families for some reason.  So they live with a foster family.
Students collected 40 pairs of socks, 17 pairs of underwear and 12 pajama sets and 2 students.  Two students, Ikumi and Gino, took them to the donation point at Sleep Train.

We all benefit when we make contributions to the community.  Thank you, Teacher Lisa Sparks and San Bruno ESL students!   We appreciate your big hearts and generous spirit!
