Here is what 2012-13 SMAS ESL Morning Student Council President Hitomi shared with them:

Why Is Adult School So Important For Adults?

I am so happy to have this opportunity to participate this conference.  My name is Hitomi. I’m from Japan. I came to this country about three years ago and I’ve been to San Mateo Adult School for two and half years.  I’d like to explain why Adult School is so important  especially for Adults.

This is my husband’s coworker’s story.  Let me call him Alex. He moved from his country with all of his family members.  Alex was the first born child and his parents lived together.  Alex decided to come to this country to start new life in the United State.  So he sold his house in his country.  Alex had an excellent job but his parents didn’t know what to do their daily life.  His parents were so isolated because no job, no friends, no relatives.  Moreover, they didn’t know how to speak, read, write English.  As a result of this situation, parents were depressed and low-spirited.

This case is not unusual.  I can see many elderly people came to this country from all over the world without English.  However, I believe that if they go to adult schools, their life will start again.  Adult school is the only one place where everybody can join; learn from the very Basic English like A, B and C.  It takes time but they can become good community members, citizens who are part of American society.

Please consider these adults are still living in here. Their homes are in the United States.  Please support Adult Schools!

Thank you
