Our Opportunity to Contribute to Better Adult Education Across the Nation

Tuesday, January 7th is a big day!

First, since it's Tuesday... it's RED for Adult Ed!!  K12 Adult Schools need Designated Funding!

It is the first day of Spring Semester Classes for ESL. (For more important dates, click here.)

And...   on this day, we will be visited by Dr. Brenda Dann-Messier, Assistant Secretary of Education for the United States, and Cheryl Keenan, who is the head of the Adult Education Division of the US Department of Education.  They will be here from 1:30 – 3:00 and they want to meet with students and teachers.

This is a great opportunity to show what a great school we have and to share our experience, knowledge, and wisdom with decision makers in Washington, DC.

They want to learn more about how to make Adult Education better, especially for working adults with low basic skills.  The US has many such adults.

Are you available Tuesday at 1:30 pm?

Dr. Brenda Dann-Messier will hold a roundtable discussion with students at that time.

Sample questions for the roundtable discussion with students:

·         What are your aspirations?
·         Why did you enroll?
·         How long did it take you to get into the program?
·         Are you working or not working?
·         What are supports do you need?
·         Do or did you have a difficult time finding about where places are for learning English?
·         Do you find times convenient?
·         Did you have to wait to enroll?  If so,  for how long?
·         Do you know other people who want to get in into education?
·         Is there anything that is keeping you or others you know from attending classes?
·         What does this program offer that is the most help?
·         What other educational programs do you want or need?
·         What other services do you need to help you meet your goals?
·         If the sky is the limit, what do you want from a perfect educational system?

Meet Dr. Brenda Dann-Messier:

Your experience, ideas, and opinions are important.

Adult Education is for YOU.

To make the best Adult Education system possible, it is important to understand what students know, need, and want.

Please think about these questions.  Maybe you have other ideas, knowledge, or questions you want to share.

Please consider coming to the roundtable on Tuesday.  Ask Tim or your teacher for more information about this on Tuesday.

By the way, while students are meeting with Dr. Dann-Messier, teachers will meet with Ms. Keenan.

We are very lucky to have this opportunity to share our experience, knowledge and suggestions with officials from the Federal government.

They will not visit every school in California.

Other schools are depending on us to participate and do our best to share what we know.

In this way, we can help build and renew Adult Education for everyone - not just in California but across the nation.

What an exciting way to begin 2014!
