Thank You, SMAS Volunteers, For Helping Us Grow!

Thank you for helping us grow!
During these uncertain, stressful and often scary times it is very important to focus on the positive sides of our lives. We would like to share the success of the recent SMAS Volunteer Appreciation Event.

San Mateo Adult School Volunteers are an important part of our school life and help us maintain Community relationships. For years Community Members along with former and current SMAS Students have volunteered their time and energy by helping Staff, Teachers’ and Students wherever they are needed. Even during the COVID-19 shelter-in-place order, many SMAS Volunteers have continued to support Teachers’ and Staff in our efforts to service Students via emails and phone calls.
Every year, since 2016 when SMAS current Transition Navigator Patty Villar started the Volunteer Appreciation tradition, SMAS has expressed its gratitude to its volunteers by celebrating them at the end of each school year. Our leadership team decided that even though we are living through very uncertain and scary times, this year would be no exception. The leadership team, Marina Kravtsova, Tia Marlowe and Patty Villar prepared and then hosted the Volunteer Drive Thru Appreciation along with Edgar Figeroa, Hilda Villegas, Lester Membreno and Student Volunteer Shelly Cheng.

Drive Thru Appreciation
Seventy Volunteers were invited to stop by our outside pickup station to receive their certificate and  thank you gift. Forty one volunteers were able to make it.  Everyone socially distanced and wore masks. Our leadership team and Volunteers were happy to see one another, though we were not always able to recognize each other because of the masks.  Many warm words were exchanged during this event, and all our Volunteers told us that they miss the school very much and would like to support us during these difficult times. Volunteers who couldn't attend the event also sent their best wishes to the school and expressed their readiness to continue supporting our school and its students.

There is a quote from a classroom volunteer and ESL student Irina Mudraya which is a good summary of everything Volunteers have said to us: “I think that I couldn't be what I am now in America without our school. I will try to do my best to help other students.
