MLK and Adult Ed Hearing Wed Jan 29th, 2014

Next week, Monday, January 20th, is a Federal Holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King.

School is CLOSED on Monday, January 20th.

Dr. King worked very hard to remind the United States and the world that everyone is equal and has the right to express ideas, get a good education and a good job, and enjoy a life with dignity.  He believed in truth, love, and justice.

Read more about Dr. King here.

The week after that there is also an important hearing about Adult Education in the State Legislature

(I apologize to everyone for getting the date wrong the first time I posted this!  As I've shared on Facebook, I had a head injury at 24 and it permanently affected my ability to remember dates.  I get them wrong all the time.  I have to check and recheck.  My apologies!)

It is an "oversight hearing".  An oversight hearing is a way for the Legislators to get more information about something.

The Legislators are elected by the people.  They make laws and approve the budget.  To make good decisions, they need good information.

We can help them.

We can give good information about Adult Education.

The oversight hearing is a joint (combination) hearing with 2 committees:

The Senate Education committee

The Assembly Higher Education committee.

This is a very good opportunity for us to tell these committees
what we know about and what we want for Adult Education.

We can send them our student survey.

We can send them our ideas, experience, needs, opinions.

How can we do this?

We can write letters and send them to:

Senate Education Committee
Attention:  Adult Education Oversight Hearing
Room 2083
State Capitol
Sacramento, CA 95814

Assembly Higher Education Committee
Attention:  Adult Education Oversight Hearing
Legislative Office Building, Room 173
1020 N Street
State Capitol
Sacramento, CA 95814

It is good and important that the Legislators want more information about Adult Education.

They know Adult Education matters!

Two of the Assembly members taught Adult Education.  They understand how important it is.

Now the Legislators want lots of good information so they can make good decisions in this time of big change for Adult Education.

You can help them with your letters.

The Legislature cannot make good decisions without information from the people -

because their job is to represent the people when they make laws and decide budgets.

They cannot do that if they do not know what the people need and want.

We, the people, have the power.   Let's use it to create the best future possible.
