ESL students, we need you.
Wherever you live, whatever school you attend, we need your knowledge, your ideas, your strength.
We have come a long way but we have more to go. We need your participation.
San Mateo Adult School ESL students, we need your special experience and skills.
Our school is very active. Our school has an ESL Student Council. Our students do many things to help the school, the community, and Adult Education across the state. They have a lot of skill in this area.
San Mateo Adult School ESL students wrote emails, sent postcards, signed petitions, held rallies, went to Sacramento, wrote essays, made videos, wrote the Press, invited the Press to school, sold and wore and t-shirts, and did many, many other things to help save Adult Schools and Adult Education.

We have accomplished many goals:
We saved Adult Schools.
They were not all closed.
We helped many, many people understand: Adult Education Matters!
But!
We still have goals to accomplish:
Adult Schools still need Designated Funding.
Adult Schools need to be equal partners in the new Regional Consortia.
We need student participation in the new Regional Consortia system.
If the new Regional Consortia are going to be good
We need to know what students want and need.
We need student experience, creativity and ideas.
We need student participation and leadership.
Everyone matters. Everyone has skills, strengths, and talents. Everyone is important.
You are important!
Here is a list of ways you can use your experience, power, and gifts to reach our goals:
1. Wear Red on Tuesdays - and explain why you are wearing red to co-workers, friends, family.
2. Think about what ESL students need for Adult Education. Talk about this with your classmates and teachers. Hitomi and Marina made a survey. You can also make a survey or a list. You can share survey results or the list with Mr. T and Tim. www.surveymonkey.com
3. Contact the press - English language press or your home language press. Tell them about Adult Education. Tell them about Adult Schools. Tell them what we are doing.
4. Write a letter or email to the Governor or the Legislature. They are starting to think about the new budget for next year. Tell them Adult Schools need their own safe money. Tell them Adult Education matters.
5. Visit another Adult School and share some of these ideas with them. Help them get started with a Red for Adult Ed on Tuesdays campaign, their own survey, or other ideas. If you are interested in doing this, tell me, Teacher Cynthia.
6. Share your ideas about these things with the ESL Student Council, your classmates, your teachers, Mr. T and Tim, and me, Teacher Cynthia, so I can share your ideas on this blog.
Together, we have come so far.
Together, we can go further.
Together, we can reach our goals.
