Sad Day for Oakland Adult School

Adult Education has been in a difficult place for five years.

There have been many cuts.

And some schools were closed.

We are lucky.  We are part of an excellent and strong school district.

And our students and staff have worked very hard to get the message out:

Adult Education Matters!

We have had cuts.

But we are still here.

But not all schools are so lucky.

Yesterday, the Oakland School Board voted to close the last classes of Oakland Adult School.

A few years ago, the school was very big.

Many people in Oakland need ESL, GED, ABE, High School Diploma, Family Literacy and Job Skills classes.

But many classes were cut because the money was cut.

And now the school is closed.

This is a sad day for Oakland.

And a sad day for us.

Because we understand these people.

We understand they need and want to learn English to help their children, go to work, and join in their community.

We hope that in the future, Oakland Adult School can open again.

We are all working hard to save and rebuild Adult Education.

Soon, I will put information here about what we can do.

For now, please take a moment and think about the people of Oakland.
